This is a very rare early French made bag for the Chauchat machine gun's magazines. American soldiers would've been issued these for a brief period before they received US made bags.
This example was made for French use so its material culture differs from the other common bags. It is a very beautifully designed bag with a hybrid canvas & leather construction. There are two stamps in this bag meaning it was possibly depot-repaired in 1918. The bag still has all its straps. There is a clear French depot stamp dated 1918 from when it was repaired. A very rare piece of French & US militaria.
