Jacket has two general stars on each epaulette, U.S. collar insignia, three unit awards above right breast pocket with nametag on pocket above an Army Staff Identification Badge, above left breast pocket is a Combat Infantryman's Badge (which should have a star to indicate 2nd award), a VERY impressive set of ribbons which include Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Silver Stars, 4 Bronze Stars with "V" device for valor, 19 Air Medals, 3 purple hearts, plus Korean War and Vietnam War service. On the pocket is a senior parachutist's badge.
Hemphill had a long career from 1951-1985, a total of 34 years. He was wounded in Korea while charging an enemy machine gun position, knocking it out with a rocket launcher. He deployed to Vietnam twice, the second time as colonel of the 3rd Brigade, 9th ID. He passed away in 2021.
