Rare WWI U.S. Army Fur Winter Cap, likely constructed with rabbit fur, as used in the Russian Expedition in both Vladivostok and Archangel. Many of these caps were sourced from existing stockpiles dating back to the Indian Wars, while others were specially contracted by the Army or acquired from the civilian market. This cap was likely manufactured during WWI but lacks a manufacturer’s tag. The fabric-covered buttons suggest it may have originated from the civilian market, but the unknown black marking “VR-5,” visible when the ear flaps are folded down, indicates probable military use. The interior is lined with dark green wool and has a thin black fabric sweatband, consistent with WWI-era production. There is some fur loss at the base and slight separation at the back of the cap.
