Vietnam War-era U.S. Navy USS Jouett Commander’s Ballcap, named to Admiral Samuel Gravely, Jr., the first African-American to become an Admiral and later Vice Admiral. The cap dates to around 1970, during Gravely’s command of the guided missile frigate USS Jouett. It was during this time that he was selected to become the first African-American flag officer. Gravely retired in 1980, capping a historic career that began in 1942.
