This is a scarce WWI US Army officer’s visor cap made by A. Stagg of Paris, France, but of English manufacture, as confirmed by the J.R. Gaunt, London-made Army eagle insignia. The leather sweatband is named to E. Drake, however, no searches have been made to determine his service. The visor cap shows slight fraying to the wool in some areas, consistent with its age. The chinstrap is secured by unmarked, foreign-made gilt service buttons, which, while likely period pieces, appear to be post-war replacements rather than the darkened bronze finish typical of WWI buttons.
