WWI US Army Purple Heart grouping that is named to Private Hans O. Johnson of the 128th Machine Gun Battalion, 35th Division. The 35th Division was a Kansas and Missouri National Guard division that had a pivotal role in major battles in WWI. The 35th Division first took place in the Battle of St. Mihiel before being moved to the woods east of Beauchamp in preparation for the Battle of Meuse-Argonne. During the initial stages of the 47-Day Battle of Meuse-Argonne the 35th played a crucial role in the beginning advances driving the initial 6.25-miles taking Vauquois Hill, Cheppy Very and eventually making hold in Montrebeau Woods. Unfortunately the 35th is most known for the heavy causalities they had taken throughout the first several days of the battle eventually failing to take Exermont leading to their withdrawal from the rest of the battle and replacement by 1st Division. The medal grouping itself comes in a size appropriate riker case and includes the original period WWI dog tags, victory medal and purple heart medal. The dog tags are in period condition being defaced of the original information outside of name and Army service number intentionally leading into battle. The victory medal is in good condition with some tarnishing present however the ribbon is heavily worn with frayed edges and worn color. The purple heart medal is in good shape with the solider name engraved on the back but does have some notable tarnishing present on the medal but only light wear on the ribbon.
