WWI US Army uniform grouping named to Private Roscoe F. Bryan of Company E, 320th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division. Bryan was a Pennsylvania native originating from Montoursville who served overseas in France from Aug 8th 1918 to May 30th 1919. The 80th Division with its iconic mountain backdrop patch insignia is remembered in WWI for many notable actions including participation in Battle of Somme, Meuse-Argonne and Battle of Saint-Mihiel. Specifically Roscoe as part of the 320th Infantry Regiment would have participated in all three stages of the Meuse-Argonne Campaign. The grouping did require some research because the jacket has the incorrect name “M. H. Bryan” written that does not align with the 80th Division patch insignia being present. With help of the town name Montoursville Pennsylvania written on the paper Memorial Day program in the grouping we were able to track down that the uniform jacket belonged to Roscoes brother Mosses H. Bryan who was not in the 80th Division and did not go overseas during WWI. We believe, at least for the jacket, that Roscoe removed his 80th Division patch insignia from his own jacket and placed it on his brothers jacket likely due to heavy wear on his own uniform to still allow for parade use and display purposes.
The grouping comes with an assortment of items including uniform coat, jacket, undershirt and overseas cap as well as a set of socks, a set of puttees, a personal car kit (void of items less a extra private insignia and collar sweat wraps), and a Memorial Day town program with corresponding parade veterans badge. The uniform coat itself is in great condition with some general frayed edges with heaviest concentration at the bottom. The uniform jacket is in good condition with some moth holes present and a button missing from the shoulder bar insignia. The uniform undershirt is in marginal heavily used condition with several areas with staining or holes present throughout. The overseas cap is in good but heavily worn condition with heavy grime and dirt deposits along the head line and green oxidation present on the hat insignia disk. The socks, puttees, personal care kit and Memorial Day items are all in good but period correct condition with general wear present.
