Original WWI US Navy writing desk, medals, and letter grouping belonging to Machinist Mate 1st Class (MM1) Ralph Eugene Wilcox, a Norwalk, Ohio native. Wilcox joined the Navy shortly after America declared war, and after several months of training, he joined US Sub Chaser 79 on Nov 17, 1917 where he served approximately a year until the Armistice. Includes several 1917-1919 letters, two reunion medals, and a copy of The Deck and Boat Book.
Sub Chaser No. 79 (SC-79) was one of the many sub chasers built by the United States during World War I. Unfortunately, there is limited information available specifically about SC-79's activities during the war.
Like other sub chasers, it is likely that SC-79 participated in patrolling coastal waters, searching for enemy submarines, and providing convoy escort duties to protect merchant shipping.
