This rare WWI-era USMC early M1910 pea green canteen cover features an unusual yet correct design, using USMC cuff buttons and stitched buttonholes instead of the standard male-female buttons. Originally an early Army canteen cover, evidenced by faint holes from previously attached male fasteners, it underwent a depot rework. This is indicated by the "U.S.M.C." ink stamp inside the left flap. Additionally, a period Marine's name is stenciled on the bottom of the cover, reading “A.R(?). *YSE*,” with the asterisks being illegible. The cover houses a canteen and cup, both marked "L.F. & C. 1918." The canteen is stenciled with the number 6, although its significance, whether a unit marking or otherwise, is unclear. Notably, the hanger is positioned high, typical of Marine covers, in contrast to Army covers where hangers are positioned much lower. Overall, the canteen is in very good condition, albeit with some staining near the rear hanger.
